Dentures Q & A

What are dentures?

Dentures are removable appliances used to replace missing teeth and restore your smile to benefit both your appearance and your health. Dentures are made of a mixture of metal and acrylic resin. They get molded to fit the exact shape of your mouth and stay in place with suction that makes your dentures stick to your gums.

What are the different types of dentures?

There are several types of dentures available for you to choose from, including:

Conventional full dentures

If you choose conventional full dentures, Dr. Mendoza removes any remaining teeth from your mouth. Conventional full dentures get placed in your mouth once the healing process is complete, which often takes a few months.

Immediate full dentures

For immediate full dentures, Dr. Mendoza takes measurements and makes models of your jaw. He then sends the molds to a lab where your dentures get made. Once Dr. Mendoza receives your dentures, he removes your remaining teeth and inserts your dentures.

While immediate full dentures offer the benefit of never having to be without teeth, realignment is required once the bone supporting your teeth heals. Healing often takes several months and reshapes your mouth, causing your dentures to loosen.

Partial dentures

Partial dentures allow you to keep any natural teeth without disease or cavities. Similar to dental implants, partial dentures rest on a metal framework that attaches to your natural teeth. Occasionally, Dr. Mendoza puts crowns on your natural teeth that serve as anchors for the dentures. Partial dentures offer a removable alternative to bridges.

Why choose dentures?

While everyone has his or her reasons for choosing dentures, a significant benefit they offer is that dentures are one of the least expensive options available. Dentures also offer an immediate and reliable solution to missing teeth.

How do you care for dentures?

To properly care for your dentures:

  • Brush your gums and tongue, as well as the roof of your mouth
  • Place your dentures in either a denture cleanser solution or plain cold water when not in use
  • Rinse your dentures daily before brushing them with a soft bristle toothbrush

Saliva helps hold your dentures in place. However, denture adhesives can also help hold your dentures in place and form a seal to keep food from sticking between your dentures and gums.

Denture adhesives are not a remedy for poorly fitting dentures. Instead, see Dr. Mendoza and have your dentures realigned or replaced to prevent the development of oral sores.
